The Historical Reason Women’s Buttons Are Placed on the Left

This design soon became a subtle marker of privilege. Being dressed by another person signaled wealth and social standing, and women’s fashion reinforced that image. During the Victorian era, clothing emphasized refinement and elegance for women, while men’s attire focused on function and independence.

For men, buttons on the right made practical sense. Most men were right-handed, and their clothing was influenced by military and workwear. Right-side buttons allowed easier movement and quicker access, especially for coats and jackets used in daily labor or service.

Over time, the original reasons faded. Women dressed themselves, and men’s clothing evolved beyond uniforms. Still, the tradition remained. Fashion holds onto familiar patterns, even after their purpose is gone.
