Some people wash eggs out of habit, while others do it for peace of mind. But fresh eggs naturally come with a built-in protective layer called the cuticle or egg bloom. This thin coating acts like armor, sealing the pores of the shell and shielding the egg from bacteria.

The cuticle is incredibly effective. It prevents harmful microorganisms from slipping through the shell and even helps reduce moisture loss. When you wash an egg, you remove this natural defense, leaving the egg more exposed to potential contamination. That’s why unwashed eggs—with the cuticle intact—carry a very low risk of issues like salmonella.
