According to reporting on his family, Pretti was formerly married, and his ex-wife did comment to AP News shortly after his death. She did not want her name published.

In that brief statement to AP News, she said she was not surprised he was involved in protests against President Trump’s immigration policies.

She noted they divorced more than two years before his death and she had moved out of Minnesota, and she hadn’t spoken to him since their separation.

She described him as someone who might shout at law enforcement at demonstrations, but added she had never known him to be physically violent.
