The peaceful rural town of Lake Cargelligo in New South Wales, Australia — home to roughly 1,500 residents — has been thrust into a state of shock and fear following a devastating act of violence that left three people dead and another seriously wounded on January 22, 2026.

What began as an ordinary Thursday afternoon quickly devolved into chaos and heartbreak as gunfire erupted in multiple parts of the tight-knit community. In the days that followed, hundreds of police officers, tactical units and specialist search teams fanned out across wide expanses of bushland and farmland in a desperate bid to find a suspect now at large.

The events have sent shockwaves through the town — affecting families, prompting intense media scrutiny, and drawing urgent questions about domestic violence, policing, public safety, and community resilience.

The Incident: Multiple Shooters, Multiple Scenes

Shortly after 4:30 p.m. AEDT on Thursday afternoon, emergency services were alerted to reports of gunfire in two distinct locations within Lake Cargelligo.

At Bokhara Street, officers responding to the first call found a man and woman inside a vehicle, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to provide aid, they were pronounced dead at the scene. A short time later, police were sent to reports of further shots fired on Walker Street — where they discovered another woman who had been fatally shot and a 19-year-old man in serious condition, later rushed to hospital.

Law enforcement quickly established crime scenes at both sites and appealed to local residents to remain indoors and vigilant as the situation developed.

The Victims: Lives Lost, Futures Shattered

The community has been grappling with the grief of losing beloved residents in what was one of the most violent episodes in the town’s recent history.

While official identification details have been carefully managed out of respect for families, public reporting has confirmed that among the dead was a 25-year-old pregnant woman whose life and the life of her unborn child were both tragically cut short. Her partner, a 32-year-old man, was also among those killed. A 50-year-old woman was the third fatality, found at the Walker Street location.

The surviving victim, 19-year-old Kaleb Macqueen, suffered multiple gunshot wounds — including to the head, shoulder and leg — and was treated at a regional hospital. Macqueen later spoke about the terrifying moments when the violence erupted, recalling his instinct to run as shots rang out and fearing the incident had not yet ended.

The Suspect: A Man At Large

According to NSW Police, the man believed to be responsible — identified by multiple news outlets as 37-year-old Julian Ingram — fled the scene shortly after the shootings and remains at large.

Ingram is described as a local council worker and someone known to the police, and officials have made it clear that the search is exceptionally challenging due to the vast and rugged terrain surrounding the town.

Police have issued a warrant for murder and warned that the suspect may be armed and dangerous, urging anyone who sees him not to approach him but to contact emergency services immediately.
