New Year’s Eve is supposed to be a night of celebration, laughter, and resolutions for the coming year. Fireworks light up the sky, friends and family gather, and people toast to new beginnings. But for me, this New Year’s Eve almost became the night I would never forget… and not for the reasons anyone hopes.
I was running a bit late. Of course, that’s always the way it is. When I arrived, the party was already in full swing. Music was playing, people were laughing, and the smell of food and champagne filled the apartment. I hugged Jenna, set my coat down, and grabbed a drink. Everything felt normal, fun, and safe—just how a New Year’s Eve should be.
As midnight approached, the excitement in the room became palpable. People began to gather near the windows, champagne glasses in hand, waiting for the countdown. I joined them, pressing my hands against the cool glass as the clock ticked closer to twelve. I could feel my heart racing—not from fear, but from anticipation. After all, this was the moment we had all been waiting for.
Then came the first loud bang. Fireworks outside. A cheer went up from the group, and everyone leaned forward to get a better look. That’s when I noticed it—a small, flickering fire near the trash bins across the street. At first, I thought it was just another firework, but it quickly became clear that this was something else. Flames were rising higher, and smoke began to curl upward.
